There’s something almost unsettling about the way Facing El Chapo ends.
After 91 minutes of gunfire, paranoia, threats and that constant feeling that the cartel could be watching from literally anywhere, you might expect the movie to give us a proper answer about what happened to Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán’s family. Instead, it pulls back.
And honestly? I think that works.
The movie is not really interested in turning El Chapo into the star of some giant cartel family saga. It stays close to the police officers caught in an impossible situation after discovering the most wanted man in Mexico sitting inside a stolen vehicle. The result is much more intimate and nerve-racking than a conventional crime epic.
But once the credits roll, one question becomes impossible to ignore:
What actually happened to El Chapo’s family after his final capture?
That’s where the movie and real life start telling two very different stories.
The Ending of Facing El Chapo Is Really About One Thing
The final stretch of Facing El Chapo keeps its attention on the officers and the immediate threat surrounding them.
The basic setup is terrifying enough. A routine traffic stop turns into the discovery of El Chapo, and suddenly these officers are responsible for keeping one of the world’s most notorious cartel leaders alive and contained.
That sounds like a victory.
It doesn’t feel like one.
Throughout the movie, El Chapo’s greatest weapon isn’t necessarily a gun. It’s the knowledge that his organization can reach people far beyond the scene itself. His threats against the officers’ families are what make the situation feel so personal.
That was one of the parts of the film that worked for me. The danger isn’t presented as some distant cartel army on a map. It’s right there, hanging over ordinary people who made one terrible discovery during a normal shift.
When the reinforcements finally arrive and El Chapo is transferred into official custody, the movie effectively closes the door on that particular nightmare.
But historically, that’s where the bigger nightmare was just beginning.
Did El Chapo’s Family Appear at the End?
Not really.
The family isn’t given a conventional final scene where we check in on every wife, son or relative. Instead, the ending works more like a bridge between the events of 2016 and everything that followed.
That choice makes sense because Facing El Chapo isn’t structured like a full biography. It’s a contained thriller about the capture operation and the people caught in its immediate aftermath.
The movie’s message is basically this:
Capturing El Chapo didn’t magically erase the Sinaloa Cartel.
His arrest created a vacuum.
And somebody was going to fill it.
That somebody eventually included members of his own family.
The Real Story Gets Much Darker
This is where the real-life story becomes considerably more complicated than the movie’s ending suggests.
After El Chapo was captured in January 2016 and eventually extradited to the United States, his criminal empire didn’t simply disappear. His sons became increasingly important figures within the faction known as Los Chapitos.
The group is associated with:
- Iván Archivaldo Guzmán Salazar
- Jesús Alfredo Guzmán Salazar
- Ovidio Guzmán López
- Joaquín Guzmán López
And this is where the family story takes a dramatic turn.
Instead of inheriting a stable empire from their father, the brothers entered a world of competing factions, arrests, military pressure and internal cartel warfare.
The family name that once represented power increasingly became a liability.
Los Chapitos and the Collapse of the Old Order
Ovidio Guzmán Lopez became one of the most recognizable members of the younger generation.
His arrest by Mexican authorities in 2023 was a major blow to Los Chapitos. He was subsequently extradited to the United States, where his legal situation continued to develop.
Then came Joaquín Guzmán López.
His July 2024 arrest became one of the strangest chapters in the modern Sinaloa Cartel story because it was connected to the capture of longtime cartel figure Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada.
That wasn’t just another arrest.
It fundamentally changed the balance inside the organization.
Suddenly, the sons of El Chapo weren’t simply dealing with American prosecutors. Their faction was also facing a serious internal conflict with forces loyal to El Mayo.
And Sinaloa paid the price.
The Two Brothers Still at Large
While Ovidio and Joaquín ended up in U.S. custody, Iván Archivaldo and Jesús Alfredo Guzmán remained at large.
Their situation is almost the mirror image of their father’s final years as a fugitive.
They have enormous notoriety, major law-enforcement attention and nowhere that can truly be considered safe.
The U.S. government has also offered substantial rewards for information leading to their arrests.
That’s one detail the movie’s relatively contained ending can’t really communicate.
For El Chapo, the story was about becoming powerful enough to stay ahead of the authorities.
For his sons, the story has increasingly become about surviving the consequences of that legacy.
What About Emma Coronel?
This is probably the family member most casual viewers will recognize.
Emma Coronel Aispuro, El Chapo’s former wife, became a major public figure during her husband’s American trial. Her own legal troubles eventually led to a federal prison sentence after she pleaded guilty to charges connected to helping her husband’s criminal organization.
She was released from U.S. custody in 2023.
Since then, her public image has been dramatically different from the one viewers saw during El Chapo’s trial. She has appeared in public and around fashion-related events, creating a bizarre contrast with the violent criminal world associated with her husband.
That contrast is part of what makes the Guzmán family story so strange.
One branch of the family remains associated with an active cartel conflict.
Another has been absorbed into the American legal system.
Others have tried to build lives far removed from the criminal empire.
There isn’t one single “El Chapo family ending.”
There are several.
And Then There Was the Family Exodus
One of the more extraordinary developments came in 2025, when reports emerged that a large group of relatives connected to Ovidio Guzmán Lopez had entered the United States.
The reported movement involved 17 family members crossing into the San Diego area and was widely linked to negotiations surrounding the Guzmán brothers and U.S. authorities.
This detail sounds almost too cinematic.
But that’s the reality of the post-El Chapo era: parts of the family that once lived at the center of cartel territory were increasingly looking toward the United States for safety, legal protection or a way out.
The Guzmán dynasty was no longer functioning as one unified machine.
It was splintering.

That’s not the movie it’s trying to be.
And honestly, giving us a neat family epilogue might have weakened the ending.
The Most Interesting Part Is What the Movie Leaves Out
For me, the biggest strength of Facing El Chapo is actually what happens after the final confrontation.
You know that capturing El Chapo is only one piece of the story.
You know the cartel isn’t going to vanish because one man is sitting in a cell.
You know somebody will fight over the money, territory and influence he leaves behind.
And history proved that instinct correct.
The rise of Los Chapitos, the arrests of Ovidio and Joaquín, the continued fugitive status of Iván and Jesús Alfredo, and the conflict with factions aligned with El Mayo all show how little a single arrest can accomplish when the underlying criminal infrastructure remains.
That’s much more interesting to me than another movie ending with a giant “THE END.”
Because there wasn’t an end.
There was a handoff.
So, Where Is El Chapo’s Family Now?
The simplest answer is: scattered across completely different worlds.
El Chapo himself remains imprisoned in the United States under an extremely restrictive federal regime.
Ovidio Guzmán López and Joaquín Guzmán López are dealing with the U.S. justice system.
Iván Archivaldo and Jesús Alfredo remain wanted fugitives.
Emma Coronel has completed her prison sentence and returned to public life.
Other relatives have relocated or become involved in negotiations and legal arrangements connected to the United States.
Meanwhile, the broader Sinaloa Cartel has continued to experience internal conflict.
That’s a brutal legacy.
El Chapo spent decades building an organization around secrecy, fear, money and personal loyalty. Yet once he was permanently removed from the board, the family structure around him proved far less stable than the legend suggested.
My Take on the Ending
I actually prefer that Facing El Chapo doesn’t try to cram all of this into its final 10 minutes.
The movie works because it feels like a snapshot of one terrifying night rather than a Wikipedia page with explosions.
The officers don’t know how the story will end.
And neither do we.
That’s the point.
When El Chapo is finally taken away, you get the satisfaction of seeing the immediate threat disappear. Then reality creeps back in. His empire is still there. His enemies are still there. His family is still there.
Only the man at the center is gone.
And that makes the real story considerably darker than the movie’s final shot.
The Guzmán family didn’t get a Hollywood ending. They got fragmentation, prison sentences, fugitives, political pressure and a legacy that became increasingly difficult to escape.
That’s the part Facing El Chapo leaves hanging in the air.
And, as a crime-movie fan, I think that’s exactly why the ending sticks with you.
