There is always a strange feeling when a new show tries to continue the legacy of something as beloved as The Office. Most spin-offs either lean too hard on nostalgia or spend so much time proving that they are different that they forget to be funny. The series takes the documentary crew concept from The Office and moves it somewhere completely different: the struggling Toledo Truth Teller, a historic Midwestern newspaper that is trying to survive while the media industry around it keeps changing. I actually like the idea of The Paper becoming a September show.

There is something appropriate about returning to the Toledo newsroom at the same time every year. It gives Peacock a dependable comedy slot and gives the series a little identity of its own instead of making it feel like another random streaming release that disappears into the schedule.

Why The Paper Season 3 Makes Sense

The biggest reason I’d expect Peacock to at least seriously consider another season is simple: the show has finally started to feel comfortable in its own skin.

The first season had the difficult job of introducing an entirely new workplace, cast, tone, and set of relationships while constantly reminding viewers that this was connected to The Office.

That comparison is unavoidable.

You have the documentary-style interviews. You have characters who look directly into the camera at exactly the wrong moment. You have awkward office conversations and jokes happening in the background while another character is talking.

But The Paper isn’t really about recreating Dunder Mifflin.

It’s about a newspaper.

That difference becomes much more important as the series goes on.

The Toledo Truth Teller gives the writers a lot more material than a standard office setting. The newsroom is dealing with shrinking resources, changing media habits, corporate pressure and the increasingly bizarre relationship between journalism and the internet.

That’s fertile ground for comedy.

And honestly, it’s also one of the things that makes the show more interesting than another workplace sitcom about employees complaining about their boss.

The Ned and Mare Question

Then there is Ned and Mare.

This is probably the relationship most fans will be watching if Season 3 happens.

Domhnall Gleeson’s Ned Sampson is not simply another version of Michael Scott. He’s awkward and frequently overwhelmed, but there is a sincerity underneath the character that makes his mistakes easier to root for.

Mare, played by Chelsea Frei, brings a completely different energy to the newsroom. Their relationship has developed slowly enough that it doesn’t feel like the writers are desperately trying to manufacture a sitcom romance.

That’s important.

Personally, I’d rather see the writers keep the tension alive for a while instead of rushing into a neat romantic resolution. Once a will-they-won’t-they storyline becomes a standard relationship, you lose some of the uncertainty that made it fun in the first place.

Season 3 could easily make their relationship more complicated without turning the show into a romance series.

And that’s probably the better route.

Oscar Martinez Is Still a Major Connection to The Office

One of the smartest bridges between the original show and The Paper is Oscar Nuñez returning as Oscar Martinez.

There is a danger with legacy characters. Bring back too many and the new series starts feeling like a reunion special. Bring back one at the right moment, though, and it can remind viewers why they cared about the original without taking control of the new story.

Oscar fits that role surprisingly well.

For longtime The Office fans, seeing him again creates an immediate emotional connection. At the same time, the Toledo Truth Teller remains the center of the story.

That balance needs to continue if Season 3 gets made.

What Could Happen in Season 3?

The newspaper itself gives the writers several obvious directions.

The newsroom could face an even bigger digital crisis. The struggle between traditional journalism and online media is only becoming more ridiculous, which makes it perfect material for this particular comedy.

Artificial intelligence could also become a major target. A newspaper trying to survive while everyone around it is experimenting with automated content, algorithm-driven headlines and clickbait practically writes its own satire.

The writers could also push the individual characters into more uncomfortable territory.

A few storylines I’d personally like to see include:

• Ned trying to prove that the paper can actually make money, only to discover that every solution creates another problem.
• Mare getting more responsibility, which could put her directly against Ned on major newsroom decisions.
• The staff dealing with corporate interference, especially when management starts treating journalism like a disposable product.
• The younger employees challenging the old-school newsroom culture, creating another layer of generational comedy.
• The newspaper embracing digital media, with predictably chaotic results.

The best version of Season 3 would keep the workplace absurdity while giving the characters real problems to deal with.

That’s where The Paper has the opportunity to separate itself from The Office rather than constantly living in its shadow.

What Fans Are Saying About The Paper Season 3

The online reaction has been another encouraging piece of the puzzle.

Fans discussing the series across Reddit, YouTube and television communities have generally responded well to the cast chemistry, particularly as Season 2 gives the characters more room to develop.

The comparisons to The Office haven’t disappeared, obviously. They probably never will. But the conversation has gradually shifted from “Is this actually good?” to “Where does this go next?”

That’s a much healthier place for a spinoff to be.

Season 2’s full-season release also seems to have helped the show’s rhythm. Some viewers found the first season a little awkward while it established its identity. With ten episodes available together, the second season has more room for running jokes, smaller character moments and longer relationship arcs.

I’m usually cautious about judging a show’s future based purely on online enthusiasm. Reddit isn’t a ratings report, and YouTube comments aren’t a Nielsen-style measurement. But when the same characters and storylines keep generating discussion after people have finished the season, that’s still a useful signal.

If I had to bet on it right now, I’d put my money on The Paper Season 3 happening.

Not because Peacock has officially announced it. It hasn’t.

Not because September 2027 is confirmed. It isn’t.

The reason is that the show feels like it has more story left in it.

The cast has settled into their roles, the newspaper setting still has plenty of comedic potential, and the series has stopped feeling like it needs to constantly introduce itself as The Office‘s successor.

That’s the point where I’d want a comedy to get another season.

The biggest mistake Peacock could make would be waiting too long. The show has enough momentum right now, and the audience is clearly curious about what happens next. If the writers are already developing ideas, I’d rather see Peacock make the call sooner rather than later.

For now, though, the situation remains straightforward: The Paper Season 3 has not been officially renewed, but the signs are encouraging, and a September 2027 premiere is a realistic prediction if Peacock gives it the green light.

Until then, the Toledo Truth Teller is still standing.

And considering how badly things tend to go inside that newsroom, that’s probably an achievement by itself.
