Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has reached the point where the polite setup is over. Season 2 finally pushed the story into the territory fans have been waiting for, and if the latest Season 3 leaks are even partly accurate, things are about to get considerably uglier.
And honestly? Good.
The series has spent a lot of time moving pieces around the board. Some of those choices worked beautifully, while others tested the patience of even the most forgiving Tolkien fans. Season 3 reportedly has no intention of slowing down. Instead, it could jump straight into the War of the Elves and Sauron, the creation of the Nine, the rise of the Nazgûl, the political collapse of Númenor and, potentially, the moment that changes the entire history of Middle-earth forever: the forging of the One Ring.
There are plenty of rumors floating around, so I would not treat every leaked detail as gospel. But taken together, the reports paint a surprisingly coherent picture of where Amazon appears to be taking the story.

A Five-Year Time Jump Could Finally Fix the Show’s Pacing
One of the most interesting reported changes is a five-year time jump following the destruction of Eregion and Celebrimbor’s death.
That is a smart move.
Rather than spending an entire season watching characters clean up the consequences of the previous war, Season 3 could open with Middle-earth already transformed. Sauron is no longer hiding behind elaborate identities or quietly manipulating people from the shadows. His influence is spreading, Eriador is suffering, and the surviving Elves have been forced into a desperate retreat.
Elrond is reportedly at the center of that storyline, leading displaced Elves toward a hidden valley that will eventually become Rivendell.
That setting has enormous potential. Seeing Imladris before it becomes the legendary sanctuary known from The Lord of the Rings could be one of the season’s most rewarding visual ideas. The early production designs reportedly suggest something far less majestic than the Rivendell we know: a refuge being built because its inhabitants have nowhere else to go.
That feels right.
Middle-earth should look wounded at this stage of the story.
Sauron Finally Looks Like Sauron
Charlie Vickers has already proven that he can carry Sauron as a character, but Season 3 reportedly takes the disguise away for a much larger portion of the story.
According to leaked costume information, Sauron will appear with dark hair and a much more recognizable Dark Lord aesthetic, including imposing armor reportedly decorated with skull-like details.
This is exactly the kind of visual evolution the character needs.
The series spent considerable time showing Sauron as a manipulator, deceiver and political player. That was necessary, but eventually the character has to become the terrifying force Tolkien readers recognize.
Apparently, that transformation is coming.
Reports also suggest Sauron will establish a throne room and keep Adar’s sword as a trophy. There is something satisfyingly arrogant about that. Adar spent so much time trying to position himself as Sauron’s enemy, only for his defeat to potentially become another symbol of Sauron’s growing power.
The bigger question is what Sauron does with the Rings.
The Nine Rings Could Create the Nazgûl We Know
The reported focus on the Nine Rings for Men is arguably the most exciting part of the Season 3 leaks.
Rather than simply handing magical rings to random kings and moving on, Sauron is rumored to test potential candidates through increasingly brutal situations. The goal would be to discover exactly how easily ambition, fear and desperation can destroy them.
That sounds much more interesting than a simple “here’s a ring, become evil” storyline.
The eventual creation of the Ringwraiths needs weight. These men should feel like people who make terrible choices before they become faceless servants of Sauron.
One particularly important addition is Khamûl, played by Zubin Varla. Tolkien fans will immediately recognize the name. Khamûl is one of the Nine and traditionally the second most prominent Nazgûl after the Witch-king.
If the show handles his transformation properly, this could become one of the season’s strongest arcs.
What Could Happen to Theo?
Theo remains one of the biggest question marks.
Rumors reportedly place him in several important scenes with Sauron, including conversations about his father and the meaning of power. That immediately raises some uncomfortable possibilities.
Could Theo become one of the Nine?
There is no solid confirmation that he does, and I would be very cautious about treating that rumor as fact. Still, the idea makes narrative sense. Theo has already been positioned as someone struggling with identity, anger and temptation. Putting him within Sauron’s orbit could either lead to a spectacular downfall or give the character a chance at redemption.
The leaked imagery surrounding the early Nazgûl is also intriguing. Reports suggest audiences may see them before they become the familiar spectral figures, with variations ranging from hooded men with visible faces to heavily armored, masked warriors.
That could be fantastic if the designs avoid turning them into generic fantasy villains.
The Stranger, Gandalf and a Very Different Blue Wizard
The Rhûn storyline reportedly has another major revelation waiting.
The mysterious Dark Wizard is expected to be identified as Pallando, one of Tolkien’s Blue Wizards, according to leak reports. The series appears ready to take considerable liberties with the character, particularly if Pallando is actively cooperating with Sauron’s expanding influence.
That immediately gives the Stranger a much clearer purpose.
With the Stranger now identified as Gandalf, his journey through Rhûn could become a direct confrontation with a magical power working on Sauron’s side.
I’m still not entirely convinced this storyline will work. Rhûn has been one of the show’s most uneven elements, and giving it another major mythology twist risks making the plot feel even more detached from the main war.
But if Amazon finally connects the eastern storyline to Sauron’s larger campaign, it could retroactively make much more sense.
Galadriel, Celeborn and Sauron: This Could Get Weird
Then there is Celeborn.
Jamie Campbell Bower has reportedly joined the cast as Celeborn, Galadriel’s missing husband. His return could completely change Galadriel’s personal story.
The really strange part is the reported relationship between Celeborn and Sauron.
Rather than creating a conventional romantic triangle, the series apparently wants something much darker: manipulation, obsession, resentment and old wounds.
That is a dangerous idea.
Galadriel and Sauron’s relationship has already been one of the show’s most controversial creative choices. Adding Celeborn directly into that equation could either produce genuinely compelling drama or push the story into melodrama.
There probably isn’t much middle ground.
Another unusual character, the Orc Marnukh, is reportedly introduced as a potential defector who travels with Galadriel and Arondir. The concept is interesting because it gives the series another opportunity to explore whether Orcs possess meaningful agency rather than simply existing as disposable enemies.
Whether the show can pull that off without turning every villain into a misunderstood antihero remains to be seen.
Khazad-dûm Could Become a Powder Keg
The Dwarven storyline appears ready to explode.
Following King Durin III’s death, Prince Durin IV and Princess Disa reportedly face a succession crisis while another member of Durin’s family challenges the prince’s claim.
And naturally, Sauron is lurking in the background.
The remaining Seven Dwarven Rings are reportedly central to his strategy, giving him another way to destabilize Middle-earth without simply marching armies through every kingdom.
The most ridiculous-sounding rumor is also one of the most entertaining: the Balrog of Moria may actually speak.
According to reports, Simon Pegg could provide the creature’s voice.
I have absolutely no idea whether that will be brilliant or completely absurd.
A talking Balrog is the kind of creative decision that could either become an unforgettable television moment or instantly pull me out of the scene.
Númenor Is Heading Toward Civil War
While Middle-earth burns, Númenor reportedly begins tearing itself apart.
Gil-galad and Elrond are said to travel to the island kingdom seeking military support, only to find a political environment dominated by Ar-Pharazôn and hostility toward the Elves.
Círdan the Shipwright is also expected to have a much larger role, including scenes with the blinded Queen Míriel.
The real escalation comes with the reported arrival of Anárion, played by Andrew Richardson, as the conflict between the King’s Men and the Faithful becomes an outright civil war.
That is where the story finally starts moving toward the Númenórean tragedy fans know is coming.
And then comes one of the most intriguing reported twists.
Sauron May Let Himself Be Captured
Sauron surrendering sounds ridiculous until you remember exactly who we’re dealing with.
According to the leaks, Númenor’s Great Armament becomes so overwhelming that Sauron realizes direct resistance is unnecessary. Instead of fighting to the death, he deliberately allows himself to be captured.
He is then taken back to Númenor in chains.
That is not defeat.
It is infiltration.
And this could be one of the best ideas Season 3 has if the writers actually commit to it. Sauron doesn’t need to conquer Númenor from the outside. He needs to get inside it and poison the kingdom from within.
Watching that process unfold could finally give the series the political menace it has occasionally struggled to achieve.
The One Ring Is Finally Coming
The biggest reported event of Season 3 is, obviously, the forging of the One Ring.
If the leaks are correct, Sauron will forge the Ring in Mount Doom and place it on his finger during the season’s major storyline.
The consequences reportedly extend immediately to the Elven Rings.
A psychic shockwave or magical disturbance connected to the One Ring would alert Galadriel, Elrond and Círdan that something has changed. Their Rings are no longer simply tools of preservation. They are connected to something far more dangerous.
This is the moment the entire Second Age story has been building toward.
And frankly, Amazon has no excuse for getting it wrong visually.
Mount Doom. Sauron. The One Ring. The eruption of power.
This needs to feel enormous.
Season 3 May Completely Change the Release Format
There is also a reported change to how Amazon intends to release the season.
Instead of following the conventional weekly schedule, leaks suggest Season 3 could launch with four episodes at once, followed by two double-episode releases, effectively compressing the entire season into roughly two weeks.
If true, that’s a surprisingly aggressive strategy.
It would also make sense for a season reportedly packed with major events. The story appears to be accelerating rapidly, and a compressed release could turn Season 3 into more of a television event than a slow weekly rollout.
Whether that actually happens remains unconfirmed.

The Rings of Power has never lacked ambition. The problem has been execution. There are moments where the series looks spectacular and feels genuinely connected to Tolkien’s world, followed by scenes that feel like they belong to an entirely different fantasy show.
Season 3, at least on paper, appears to have fewer excuses.
Sauron is rising. The Nazgûl are emerging. Númenor is fracturing. Khazad-dûm is collapsing. Rivendell is being born. And the One Ring is finally entering the story.
That’s an absurd amount of material for one season.
If Amazon can make all of those pieces feel like parts of the same historical catastrophe rather than disconnected subplots, Season 3 could easily become the strongest chapter of The Rings of Power so far.
If it can’t?
Well, no amount of expensive armor, giant battles or digitally perfect Mount Doom shots will save it.
For now, these details should remain firmly in the leak and rumor category until Amazon officially confirms them. But if even half of these reports are accurate, the next season is shaping up to be considerably darker, faster and more consequential than what came before.
And that is exactly what this show needs.
