The Slow Horses Season 6 trailer has managed to do something this series rarely needs to do: genuinely surprise me. After five seasons of betrayals, cover-ups, dead spies, political games and Jackson Lamb insulting practically everyone within shouting distance, I thought I had a pretty good idea of where the show could go next.

Then Sid Baker appeared.

Yes, Olivia Cooke is back as Sidonie “Sid” Baker, and that single reveal changes the entire emotional balance of the series. The woman many viewers assumed was permanently gone is suddenly standing at the top of a staircase, looking directly at River Cartwright as if five years of absence were nothing more than an awkward lunch break.

That was enough. Suddenly, every question surrounding Sid’s disappearance came roaring back.

And honestly? I love it.

River was talented but reckless. Sid was talented and actually seemed to understand how the intelligence game worked.

Sid wasn’t dumped into Slough House because she was incompetent. Quite the opposite. She had been placed there for a specific reason, with Diana Taverner using her to keep an eye on River.

That detail becomes much more important once you consider what happened to her.

Sid was shot in the head during the events of Season 1. She survived long enough to reach medical treatment, but River was eventually told that she had died from her injuries. Then something even stranger happened.

Her records disappeared.

Not misplaced. Not classified under another department. Erased.

So her return doesn’t feel like a random cameo.

It feels deliberate.

And that’s where I get genuinely excited about Season 6. The show isn’t merely reopening an old storyline because it ran out of ideas. Sid’s existence connects directly to River, Diana Taverner, MI5 and the uncomfortable question of how much the Park knew about her survival.

There are too many loose ends here for this to be a simple nostalgia play.

River Cartwright Has Changed — Sid Has Too

The reunion between River and Sid could be one of the best character moments of the season.

When River last saw Sid, she was unconscious after being shot. He was still relatively inexperienced, still desperate to prove himself and still carrying the baggage of being David Cartwright’s grandson.

Now he’s different.

Five seasons of Slow Horses have battered River from almost every direction. He’s been manipulated, betrayed, hunted and forced to confront the darker side of his family and the intelligence service he desperately wanted to impress.

So what happens when the person he thought was dead suddenly walks back into his life?

I don’t expect a warm hug.

I expect suspicion.

Maybe anger.

Possibly even fear.

River has learned that nothing in the intelligence world is exactly what it appears to be. If Sid suddenly turns up after years of silence, he has every reason to wonder whether she’s really there to help him.

And that’s where the trailer’s final moment becomes so effective.

Sid doesn’t arrive looking terrified.

She looks like she knows something.

That’s much worse.

The Slough House Crew Are Suddenly Targets

The timing of Sid’s return is particularly nasty because Slough House is already in serious trouble.

The possibility that Sid has been manipulated, monitored or psychologically damaged by the system fits perfectly with the show’s worldview. Slow Horses has never presented MI5 as a noble organization populated by flawless professionals. It is a bureaucracy full of ambitious people who make ugly decisions and then bury the evidence.

Sid’s disappearance is practically tailor-made for that environment.

And if she knows exactly what happened to her, Diana Taverner should be worried.

Very worried.

Season 6 Could Be River’s Most Personal Story Yet

There is a difference between River fighting a conspiracy and River confronting someone he genuinely cared about.

That’s why Sid matters.

She isn’t just another spy with classified information. Her disappearance was one of the earliest wounds in River’s story. Bringing her back forces him to confront something he thought he’d already accepted.

It also creates a fascinating question about trust.

Would River believe Sid if she told him she was being hunted?

The action will come. It always does.

But the emotional fallout is where this story can really hurt.

Why I’m Excited — And Slightly Worried

I’m excited because Sid’s return is one of the few Slow Horses developments that actually feels capable of changing the show’s existing relationships.

I’m worried because resurrection stories are incredibly easy to mess up.

If Sid comes back merely to deliver exposition, reveal a secret and disappear again, I’ll be annoyed. That’s cheap.

If the writers treat her survival as something physically and psychologically devastating, however, this could be fantastic.

The best version of Sid’s return isn’t “Surprise! She’s alive.”

It’s “She survived, but survival came at a terrible price.”

That feels much more like Slow Horses.

What Happens Next?

With Season 6 reportedly arriving with six episodes beginning September 16, 2026, there isn’t much longer to wait for answers.

The central mystery is no longer whether Sid Baker survived.

It’s why she was erased, where she has been, what she knows and whether River can trust her.

Those are considerably better questions.

And if the show really does adapt material connected to Mick Herron’s Joe Country and Slough House, there is plenty of darker territory available for the series to explore. The return of Sid could become the bridge between old secrets and the next stage of the Slough House story.

After five seasons, Slow Horses has earned the right to take a big swing.

Bringing Olivia Cooke back is certainly one.

Now I just want the show to justify it.
